Social Explorer Guide

This guide contains an introduction and tutorial for Social Explorer, a visualization and data-mapping tool recommended for Data Science research.

Download CSV File from Report

1. Select Tables.

2. Scroll through options listed by data source and category, or select Create Report on top right.

3. In Create Report, search for topic such as "health." Select the data source and year that is the best fit.

4. Select geography level. To generate a larger dataset, select the smallest geography available.

5. In this case, All County will generate a dataset including every county in the United States. Select Add.

6. Select data you want included in your report/table, such as Quality of Life, Fair or Poor Health, or Health Insurance. Click Add.

7. Once all data is selected, click Create Report.

8. Now, you will see a report/table embedded in Social Explorer. To download a CSV file, select the light blue CSV icon (third from top in the right hand, vertical toolbar).
9. Under download options, select the box for "Output column labels in the first row."
10. Scroll down and select the blue arrow beside County (CSV).

Note: You may find it more user-friendly to identify data sources in Maps, note the exact data source, then return to Reports to create a CSV file. While it is possible, we do not recommend generating a report from Maps due to high margin for error with geographic selection.
